Noteworthy 4-20-20 3 Ways to Gain Confidence When You Don't Have Any

It is perhaps shocking to you 20, 30 and 40 year olds, that the 50 and 60 year olds in your world still lack confidence. And if you ARE 50 or 60, isn’t it amazing that you have managed to not believe in yourself for half a century or more? It’s quite a feat, actually!

Look how committed you are to maintaining an old, old story about yourself. It’s like you are an archaeologist preserving ancient, dried up bones of thinking - unwilling to find fresh and uplifting beliefs about yourself.

There are many dimensions to your life: appearance, work performance, your ability to maintain an exercise program or keep your house the way you want it. In some of them, you feel confident. In some of them you don’t. 

This is why we can be confused about whether or not we - or others around us - are “confident”. We may look at how strong we feel about our ability to grow tomatoes, and think, “Yes, I am a confident person.” But then, if we consider how readily we will wear a bathing suit to a friend’s poolside party, we may realize that we are not always confident. It’s all in our perception and what we are focused on. 

The good news is that you are most likely confident about something. Maybe it’s your running routine, or your ability to apply makeup, or cook, or fix a broken car engine or perform open-heart surgery. 

If you want to be MORE confident in an area where your confidence is lower, then you have the power to change that. 

Confidence doesn't just bubble up - or come in like magic. It is a daily practice of intention. Here are three ways to gain confidence in those situations you don’t have any:

  1. Fake it until you make it - Taking action to prove to yourself that you can do or be whatever it is you think you cannot do or be
  2. Find a role model to emulate
  3. Do NOT give up

Let’s review #1:  “fake it until you make it.” Frankly, sometimes we don’t like this saying. Clearly, you can’t fake being a brain surgeon. However, if you need to or want to speak to a group of people, for example, you may not know how to do it yet. And maybe you’ve never done it before. We are not saying you need to fake that you have done this before OR that you need to ignore any anxiety. 

What we mean is that you prepare, you practice, you do some deep breaths and you go up to the podium assuming the best. At first, it may feel like a performance and you are pretending to be   confident. That is okay! Each time you “pretend” you are rewiring your sense of confidence in this arena.

Now let’s take a look at #2:  It is helpful to find a role model that is doing or being the thing that you want to do or be.  Then when you go into action and find yourself stuck with fear or uncertainty, you can think “what would that person do?”  You start to see yourself acting in the manner that your role model would act. Because they have blazed the path ahead of you, you see it is possible.  More importantly, if you can answer ‘what would my role model do’, then you actually have the answer within yourself.

Finally, #3:  This is fairly self-evident.  Completion breeds confidence. When you have accomplished the task that felt impossible, you begin to gain confidence through the sheer fact that you DID do it.
