TRIBE Tips Tuesday - July 9 - It's time for your mid year reset

Uncategorized Jul 09, 2019

I can certainly tell I'm getting older - I constantly hear myself saying things like "I can't believe it's already July."  And it's really true, I absolutely cannot believe that we are halfway through the year.

What a great time to take a pause and look back on what your plans were for 2019.

Did you have big intentions that this was the year you were going to _____________________ ? (insert your top goal here, or even a small wish)

Most of us set some sort of New Year's resolution.  Reports show that 80% of us will have walked away from these resolutions by the second week of February.  I know that I am not living my life as intentionally as I had planned.  Clearly, it' time for a reset.

As I was working out how to get back on track, I recalled my early years working for a large financial institution.  Every quarter I was part of the team that put together a massive quarterly report.  We had structured templates that we would use to show what had been accomplished in the past quarter.  And what we were committed to accomplishing in the next quarter.

At the time, it felt like a lot of busy work, but as I've built my own businesses, I've come to appreciate the value of this format.  I don't need a 'drop in the numbers' template, but some level of structure would certainly help.

One of the business-related books I've read this year is The 12 Week Year by Brian Moran and Michael Lennington.  The biggest take away for me was the notion that most people tend to complete their work to a designated deadline.  So if you set your goals to be reached on an annual basis, you will give yourself the year to accomplish them.  If you set your goals with a 12 week timeline, you'll accomplish them in 12 weeks.  Pretty simple idea.

I paired what I learned in that book with ideas from The One Thing by Gary W. Keller and Jay Papasan and Do Less by Kate Northrup, to put together my own Quarterly Review Plan.  I was pleasantly surprised at how much progress I was making.  It was also interesting to see the things I initially thought needed to happen this year, that I was able to take off my "to do" list altogether.  Woo Hoo!

So where do you stand?  Are you on track with where you hoped to be at this point of the year?  If not, this is a great time to review your goals and see if they need tweaking or just some more focus.

Six months is a really long time.  It's amazing what you can accomplish.

I believe in you!
