TRIBE Tips Tuesday - June 4 - What emotions (and actions) do the words 'empty nest' stir up in you?

Uncategorized Jun 04, 2019

Most of my friends have recently become empty nesters or are soon to become empty nesters.  So it's something we talk about.  A lot!  And it's what served as the catalyst for Lee, Carolyn and I to start TRIBE Trips and Retreats.

It's both an exciting time and a tumultuous time.  There's sadness that an amazing phase of life is coming to an end.  There's excitement about the drop in workload (laundry, meal planning, prom dress shopping, etc.) that's about to occur.

And there's also a pretty big bundle of toes-at-the-edge-of-the-cliff, staring-off-into-the-void curiosity about what lies ahead.  As you send your children off into their future, it opens up a chance for your own personal rebirth:

  • Maybe you've been working at a job you don't particularly love and now you'd like to do something you love instead.
  • Maybe you enjoyed staying home with your kids and now worry about how you'll fill your time.
  • Maybe you've been dabbling with a side gig and think NOW you'll finally have time to make it wildly profitable.
  • Maybe now you can take those amazing vacations you've always dreamed about.

The beautiful thing about living right now, is that there are no limits to what you can do - even if you're a year or two past turning forty.

I feel like there is the first Empty Nest phase when the kids leave high school and head to college.  They're gone, but not really quite gone.  Then there's the second phase when they actually graduate and start building their own lives.

I started planning for these two phases long before they arrived.  I spent a lot of time reading and following stories of women who had started their own business.  How did they transition from one phase to the next?  And what made some women have businesses that were successful.

What I learned was that women do better and their businesses do better when they are working at something they feel is meaningful.  Women want their efforts focused on making themselves (and the world around them) the best version possible.  It's not just enough to make money.  Women want to make money and spend money in a way that matters.

I want women to take control of their own money.  Take control of their second chapter.  And dive in head first to being an empty nester.  The idea of retirement has changed dramatically over the last few years.  And women are at the forefront of this change.  We have to be - we're going to live longer and most of us are starting with little less retirement savings.

Becoming an empty nester is a gift.  Enter into is with joy - and a plan!
